OVERVIEW

Acumen Building Enterprise, Inc. has installed Bill-to-Bill Changers (BBC’s) in all stations throughout the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) as part of a system wide program.  The primary goal was to provide an easy, cost efficient way to allow the users of this major public transit asset to exchange ten dollar and twenty dollar bills for five-dollar bills. These bills could then be used in the existing system ticketing machines when a high value ticket purchase is not desired.

Some major challenges that Acumen addressed included the ability for the Bill-to-Bill Changer to:

• Recognize U.S. currency in ten and twenty dollar denominations in old and new style bills
• Recognize the bills regardless of the insertion orientation
• Provide accounting and security functions built into the matrix of the hardware and software integration across the entire BART system
• Provide the ability for BART personnel to monitor all these Bill-to-Bill Changer functions in real time across their network system

BBC ENHANCEMENT TO ENTERPRISE OPERATIONS

Bill-to-Bill Changers have found wide acceptance in mass transit scenarios where high volume contact with the public is a daily occurrence.  These same conditions exist in many other areas of the economy in both the private and public sectors.  These operations can also benefit from the natural efficiencies that these machines can provide.  Some logical locations that could easily merge a Bill-to-Bill Changer program within an existing framework include airports, casinos, shopping malls, supermarkets, amusement parks and sports arenas.
